Merz Aesthetics, the world’s largest dedicated medical aesthetics business, announced today the publication of a Dermatologic Surgery article establishing a set of principles and goals for regenerative aesthetics. The authors determined successful treatments in the emerging field should be defined as those able to restore the physiological structure and function of soft tissue and bone lost through aging. They also concluded that regenerative aesthetic treatments should go beyond simply volumizing aged tissue and instead aim to restore the youthful, functional components of skin and tissue.
We’re proud to be at the forefront of regenerative aesthetics, a space destined to shape the future of the medical aesthetics industry,” said Terri Phillips, MD FAAP Chief Medical Affairs Officer at Merz Aesthetics. “This publication is a significant milestone as we work to define goals and expectations for this exciting field.”
The article provides consensus agreements among six multidisciplinary global experts, who concurred that an ideal regenerative aesthetics strategy should utilize multi-modal combination therapies which acknowledge a patient’s age, biology and tissue architecture. They also emphasized the importance of restoring the full complexity of youthful tissue architecture and function, including cellular and extracellular components.
In addition, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) was identified as a biostimulatory ingredient capable of fulfilling these goals. CaHa shows evidence of both structural and functional regeneration by boosting collagen type I/III ratios and inducing the production of elastin and proteoglycans, which ultimately improve measures of skin quality.
These consensus statements, among others described in the article, are meant to serve as a reference for future discussions on the regenerative ability of aesthetic treatments, especially with regard to injectable biostimulators.
